They can also be called a paste, pomade, glue, putty or any number of names. The wax in the formula acts as a thickening agent as well as a styling ingredient and usually gives a more matte finish than a gel will, which are known for glossy finishes.

Unlike gel and mousse that styles and then dries, a waxed based product remains pliable, allowing you to run your fingers through your hair without destroying the style you have created.

How to apply the best hair wax products

For the best results from your hair wax, spread it between your hands for a few seconds. It will stop you from getting clumps and warm it up to spread more evenly through the hair, giving far better results, especially if you're looking to add volume.

If you have short hair, apply directly to the roots, lifting the hair up and creating some volume. This technique will allow your hair to stand up for longer. A small amount is all that's necessary, so don't overdo it on the first application. You can always add more if you need to. The natural oils in your hair will mix with the wax so keep an eye on how they work together.

Once the hair wax is evenly spread through your hair, use your fingers or a bamboo hair brush to shape your hair.

Should you apply hair wax to wet hair or dry hair?

You will get a better result from your hair wax by applying it to dry hair. Styling wax used on wet hair will cause you to lose volume. Make particularly sure your roots are dry. Slightly damp ends aren't as much of an issue.

Is hair wax better than hair gel?

It depends on your hair style. They are two different hair styling products. Hair wax and hair gel give two different results. For strong hold, gel is your best option, but it can leave your hair stiff. If you have curly hair and you want to define your curls and have a bit of a 'wet look' hairstyle, wax is your best option. For light and medium hold, hair wax will tame hair that's hard to manage without it being shiny. Step down to a pomade for a shiny finish and less hold.

How do I wash hair wax out of my hair?

While gel is water based and rinses out of hair fairly well with no product, wax based products like hair wax, require a deep cleanse to remove them. If you use wax daily, using a clarifying shampoo once a week is a good idea.
