Dr Tung's Smart Floss is made from a synthetic fibre that stretches and expands. It's the comfort factor and performance that makes it one of the best selling products in store. It's vegetarian, and contains some beeswax. This popular and high performance floss used to be packaged in a plastic container, but has now been replaced with a cardboard outer and a biodegradable bag holding the floss.

It is now packaged like the Vegan version of Smart Floss is. This one is scented with cardamom. The vegan option is lemongrass scented. This is still a synthetic fibre and contains beeswax, so for ethical shoppers, this may not tick every box.

Looking back a decade ago, mainstream dental floss could include ingredients like teflon and lab derived lubricant's to make them glide in between the teeth. Much like natural lubricant, it's easy to get things to glide using safe and natural ingredients, so beeswax and vegan plant based waxes have been substituted.

Biodegradable vegan floss that doesn't break is impossible to find. We have road tested and rejected a few. Noosa Basics use bamboo charcoal and polyester blended together, so they're not biodegradable, but it doesn't break. You need to pick one or the other. The lubricant to have it glide through the gaps in your teeth is a combination of Candelilla wax infused with coconut oil and essential oils and is available in different flavours. They had the minimal plastic packaging down from the very start, with just a tiny spindle inside that the floss is wrapped around.

The only box this floss doesn't tick is the vegan floss, because it's silk dental floss. There was such a gap in this market in Australia that we went directly to the factory and got our own home brand made.

Floss picks are usually made from plastic, and like those teeny plastic fish that you get soy sauce in that end up everywhere, floss picks can be a wasteful burden. NFCo make their floss picks from a biodegradable corn starch based 'plastic' for want of a better word. Each one is individually wrapped for hygiene.

They make an adult version called Friendly Flossers, and for the kids, Fairy Floss Picks which are in the shape of Giraffe's and are super cute. The kids ones are strawberry flavoured as most small children don't like the taste of mint, and it's too 'cooling' for their sensitive mouth.
