Today we received our first delivery of the doTERRA Petal Diffuser. I'm not quite sure why we didn't have this in store all long. It has always been available in the doTERRA Home Essentials Kit, but it has a couple of different key features than other diffusers like the ultrasonic vaporiser or the aroma bloom, so we thought we would add them to our doTERRA in store collection and sell them direct.

The feature the doTERRA Petal Diffuser has that the others don't

It's a timer. Speak to any trained aromatherapist and they'll tell you it's not a good idea to diffuse essential oils all day every day. You need a break and you need to change oils on a regular basis as well. As a novice early on, I made the mistake of loving the smell of a Blue Mallee Eucalyptus oil and I diffused it in my office for about 7 hours without a break. At the end of the day I could feel a chill inside my body. The cooling effect of the oil had literally chilled my lungs from the inside and it took well over a day for them to warm back up again.

Lesson learned. These days, if I diffuse, I do it with a very weak water to oil ratio or I put it in a diffuser with a timer. The Petal Diffuser has a 1 hour, 2 hour or 4 hour timer. Once the time is up, the diffuser shuts itself down. You can manually turn off any of the other diffusers or only partially fill the water tank to get them to shut down sooner, but the timer can be handy. The only con with this is that the maximum it will run is 4 hours, which I don't necessarily find to be a bad thing.

doTERRA also make the Lotus Diffuser with a smaller benchtop footprint in an elegant design, but it has a much higher price point. If we get enough interest, we can look at stocking this too.

Cleaning between oils

If you swap essential oils on a regular basis or you haven't used it for a while, you may find the water chamber to be a little on the nose. This can happen with any diffuser. Dilute some vinegar in water and swirl it around the tank. Rinse with clean water and then you're good to go. You don't need to use something fancy like apple cider vinegar, any cheap white vinegar from the supermarket will do the trick.

How many drops of oil in the Petal diffuser?

For the size of the tank, doTERRA suggest anywhere between 5 and 12 drops of essential oils. It will depend on the oil and the size of the room you're diffusing in. Experiment until you work out what suits you the best. You can always add more oil, so starting with the 'less is more' approach is a good idea.
