How many scents does Dr Bronner Castile Soap come in?
When we published this blog originally in 2016 (which is 8 years ago now), the only castile soap range in Australia readily available to us was from Dr Bronner's, and it wasn't made in Australia. We still sell it today, but we do not stock all of the scents.
In a deliberate business shift to support local brands but also offer our customers what they want, we have dedicated the same amount of shelf space to liquid castile soaps, but are offering a smaller range of Dr Bronners and have added two new Australian brands, Dr Planet and Australian Natural Soap Company. We had always only treated castile soap as a personal care item, but Dr Planet in particular have formulated and educate around this being one of the best all purpose eco friendly cleaning products on the market, and we agree, which is why our castile soap category lives under our cleaning range and not our body care range.
The Dr Bronner's Castile Soap has 11 scents in the range. Here's a run down on what Castile Soap actually is, what the 11 scents are (and you'll use them for different reasons and at different times of the day) and a couple of suggestions on what else you can do with it.
What is Castile Soap?
It is a soap (either liquid or solid) made from oil, and using a process called saponification, turns it in to a foaming wash product. This process uses potassium hydroxide. When the saponification process is complete, there is no potassium hydroxide remaining in the liquid soap. With the ingredients in the Dr Bronner's formula, all you have left is water, coconut oil, palm kernel oil (sustainably sourced), olive oil, hemp oil, jojoba oil, citric acid, vitamin C, and a variety of essential oils depending on which product you purchase, like lavender essential oil for example. For those of you who wish to be 100% palm free, regardless of whether it's sustainable or not (and Dr Bronner who have complete control over their supply chain, not relying on the RSPO), choose one of the Australian brands we stock, both of which are palm oil free.
Dr Bronner Castile Soap 11 Fragrances
Choosing a scent can be as simple as choosing something you like the smell of, but some of the castile soaps are scented with specific essential oils suited for specific tasks.
- Dr Bronner's Almond Castile Soap - warm, comforting and slightly sweet scent, almost like marzipan or amaretto. It's quite an unusual scent and not one we stock anymore
- Dr Bronner's Baby / Unscented Castile Soap - for sensitive skin and noses, this completely free from any added scent and is the bestseller and still available in our store.
- Dr Bronner's Cherry Blossom Castile Soap - smells of the sweet aroma of cherry blossom. A beautiful scent. We still stock this in the solid soap bars but not the liquid castile soap
- Dr Bronner's Citrus Castile Soap - fresh and bright, helps cut through grease. This is more poplar for cleaning than personal care, using orange, lemon and lime essential oils. That said, we do stock it in the liquid and soap bar form and it's the favourite soap of one of our staff members.
- Dr Bronner's Eucalyptus Castile Soap - a powerful menthol scent burst can help to clear congestion and focus the mind. We still stock this in the liquid version.
- Dr Bronner's Green Tea Castile Soap - fresh and bright like the cuppa you love. In our store we only stock the solid soap bar in this scent.
- Dr Bronner's Lavender Castile Soap - calming, perfect in a bath at night. We stock this in both the solid and liquid soap.
- Dr Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap - cool the skin, clear sinuses and sharpen the mind. Great to use in the morning to wake you up or to cool down after exercise. Stocked in both the liquid and solid castile soap versions.
- Dr Bronner's Rose Castile Soap - floral and fresh, a highly floral fragrance. We stock this in both frms.
- Sandalwood Jasmine - warm and woody with fresh jasmine notes. We stock this in both the liquid and solid castile soap.
- Tea Tree - woody, medicinal, great for acne prone skin or dandruff. We stock this in the bar soap only.
It's not just a liquid soap
At Shop Naturally, we are big on multi-tasking products. While you may not choose to multi-task your products all the time, when you're travelling or when you run out of something, it's good to know your natural body wash can do a few other things for you.
- Let it step in to your organic skin care regime by using 2 to 3 drops as a facial cleaners. Half a teaspoon lathered through your hair makes and alternative to your organic shampoo if you just ran out. 2 tablespoons in your bathtub gives you a natural bubble bath, 1 drop on a toothbrush will get you out of trouble if you run out of toothpaste (but yes, it does taste like soap)
- To replace some natural cleaning products, try 1/3 cup in your laundry, 1/2 cup in a bucket to wash your floors, 1/4 cup in a spray bottle of water as an all purpose cleaning spray and a dash in water to wash your fruit and vegies.
- While it is certainly not registered as a natural pest controller (visit our natural mosquito repellent category for some more effective products), a tablespoon in a spray bottle with water and a 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or cinnamon is a great way to help keep bugs off plants and 1/4 cup of the Tea Tree version in a spray bottle will annoy ants (and also kill plants, so give it a try on weeds and see what happens)
