Make your own tinted moisturiser with spf
Are you having trouble getting a tinted moisturiser with spf to actually be a shade you can wear? There's always several shades of mineral foundation when you're buying makeup, but when you end up choosing a tinted moisturiser, there's one shade, or if you're lucky two. The chances of them being something close to you what you need can be hit and miss depending on your own skin tone and which brand you choose.
The solution - make your own tinted moisturiser with spf
The benefit of this is 2 fold. Firstly you can choose a high quality natural sunscreen formulated for the face so it doesn't dry out your skin, and secondly, you can pick a mineral foundation that is an exact match for you.
The reason we wrote this blog was after talking to one of our more sensitive customers who has had some reactions to sunscreen before, so some of the pre-made tinted spf moisturisers weren't going to work for her. After the conversation, we realised she was best to make her own.
Step 1 - choose your sunscreen
We have a top 3 here for our favourite natural sunscreens for the face. MotherSPF Mineral Face & Body Sunscreen, Simple As That Natural Face & Body Sunscreen and Wotnot Natural Face Sunscreen SPF30 & BB Cream. They are all formulated with the face in mind, so they're a little more nourishing than a cheaper body sunscreen would be on your face.
Step 2- choose your tint
Your perfect shade of mineral powder foundation. Most mineral foundation has a natural SPF rating from the mineral powder. You can also substitute bronzing powder, and again, you can use any type of powder you have a home already, otherwise, take a look through our natural makeup for a selection of mineral powders.
You can choose a liquid foundation or BB cream here, but we don't recommend it. If you want your tint to be a liquid, apply them separately. Apply your sunscreen first and then apply your liquid foundation or BB cream over the top.
Why? Taking a liquid with an SPF of 30 and a liquid with no SPF is going to dilute your sun protection factor (spf). By missing a powder in (and most powders have an unofficial spf rating of their own of around 15), you're going to hold your SPF protection.
As an alternative to a powder foundation for your tint, try the MotherSPF Golden Pearlescent Skin. It's a stunning bronzing tint to apply over or mix in with your MotherSPF sunscreen.
Step 3 - mix your tinted moisturiser with spf
You now have total control. While many people will moisturise, wait a few minutes and then apply a powder foundation over the top, not everyone has time for that. If you're short on time in your morning beauty regime or you don't like the idea of accidentally inhaling powder (yes, please keep your mouth closed and gently exhale through the nose as you apply powder foundations and bronzers and blushes), you can just mix the two together.
You can control how strong the colour is by how much mineral foundation powder you put it. Like an artist mixing paint, start off with a small amount and then test. If it's not dark enough, add more.
Ensure a proper face cleanse at the end of the day
There are plenty of people who skip an evening face cleanse, and while I don't recommend it, on days where you wear makeup or any zinc based mineral sunscreen, it's really important to wash it off before you go to sleep. We like the very subtle exfoliation you get from a konjac sponge to really get the zinc off your skin and out of your pores. Konjac sponges can be used on their own to cleanse or used with product. An oil based cleanser or micellar water will serve you better than a cream cleanser, or you can use a Wotnot Facial Wipe.
