Is Worthy Sugarcane water bottle Australia's #1 sustainable water bottle?
When you think sustainable water bottle, most people think of a stainless steel water bottle, and yes, they're a great option. For some people, there's a few reasons why they're not a good idea. The same goes for glass water bottles. When a lightweight plastic water bottle feels like the best option for you but you don't want plastic, what are your choices?
Enter Worthy, an Australian made water bottle that feels like plastic but it's made out of sugarcane instead. In this article, we're going to tell you about the history of the bottle, how it's made, where it's made and then compare it to the other sustainable drink bottle options we well so you can make an informed choice.
Worthy sustainable water bottle - sugarcane not plastic
The founders of Worthy wanted to reduce single use plastic drink bottles - around 1 million single use plastic water bottles are purchased around the globe every minute. Too many of them end up in landfill. Worthy looks like a plastic bottle, is lightweight and easy to carry like a plastic bottle, but it's made from sugarcane and is actually manufactured in Melbourne Australia.
Worthy sugarcane bottles actually capture carbon while the sugarcane is growing, which makes them carbon negative and they are zero waste at the point of manufacture. These are statements that cannot be made about stainless steel, glass or plastic.
Sugarcane grows effortlessly (like bamboo). It requires very little irrigation and actually makes its own fertiliser. Sugar from the sugarcane (which is extracted by squeezing the sugarcane), is polymerised and turned in to a plant based plastic. The waste from the sugarcane is used to power the factory where the bottles are made, and all this is done right here in Australia.
We get asked about glass water bottles and stainless steel water bottles made in Australia, and unfortunately we're just not set up in this country for that kind of manufacturing, but the team at Worthy have achieved this with their sugarcane 'plastic' water bottle.
For those with the budget to do so and the drive and motivation to support local and who think about every step of the manufacturing process and what its impact is on the planet, Worthy is a brand to get behind.
Sugarcane sustainable water bottle vs stainless steel water bottle
Stainless steel water bottles are a long lasting product and we love them. They do take a lot of resources at the point of manufacture, which is fine if you buy a quality one and give it a long life. Choosing a stainless steel water bottle where you can either replace the lid, or even better, put different lids on it, is always the best option. They weigh more than a plastic bottle and if it's an insulated water bottle, there will be 2 layers of stainless steel making it even heavier. Add the water, and they're not always the easiest to carry, especially for little ones.
Sugarcane sustainable water bottle vs glass water bottle
Glass water bottles are the purest and cleanest drink bottles to use, but there's a big catch - they're breakable. Even the glass drink bottles we sell in store that are made from heat resistant glass with a silicone sleeve on them will break under the wrong circumstances. We love them, but they're not easy to transport around.
Sugarcane sustainable water bottle vs plastic water bottle
This is where we get closer to usability, but there are some big sustainable differences with these products, which is why the Worthy bottle was invented. People like plastic bottles because they are lightweight. Worthy is too. People like plastic bottles because they're difficult to dent or break. Worthy is too.
